  27. As they say: "Easy to Flame, Harder to Tame"...
  28. You do have a point in that our postings were a bit excessive (some
  29. were erronous multiple postings while using a new mail reader... :-)
  30.  We would like to appologize if this offended any fellow net'er here.
  31. Still, the enthusiastic responses we got more than outweighed the
  32. flames... :->
  33. Now to the point: We have responded to posts here at comp.dcom.modems
  34. requesting recommendations for a GOOD FAX/VOICE mail modem system or
  35. complaints from frustrated users about poor Voice Modem performance. 
  36. Since we have been using our TYIN2000 for at least two years with
  37. great results, we thought sharing our experience would be for the
  38. benefit of fellow net'ers. We are sorry this might have offended
  39. anybody. We would like to stress that we DO NOT SELL the TYIN modems.
  40. We have been just a regular TYIN user until lately, when we decided to
  41. offer some useful TYIN utilities we developed for internal use that
  42. greatly enhance the sound quality of this modem (since the MIC input
  43. used for recording cannot exploit the full potential of this advanced
  44. board) as well as functionality of the bundled S/W. We have been urged
  45. by fellow TYIN users to offer these utils for the benefit of other
  46. TYIN users (since no such utils were available), and have decided
  47. accept the idea and offer some of them as shareware..

  49. Since we have been flamed, our best response is to cite users comments
  50. (made BEFORE we ever offered these utils):

  62. So,"why is this great modem not popular?"  you should ask.
  63. Simple answer: The manufacturer stopped promoting the product rather
  64. early in it's life cycle. Our guess is that this advanced DSP modem
  65. (the advanced TYIN4000 Pro has TWO DSP's!) was too expensive to
  66. manufacture and compete with cheap modems on the market. It actually
  67. came before it's time: Look at the popularity of the IBM MWAVE DSP
  68. modems today. The TYIN was amongst the first to offer reliable
  69. DATA/FAX/VOICE autodetect, as well as advanced H/W compression (up to
  70. 20 minutes of voice per megabyte!). From what we've heard, the TYIN
  71. technology is still embedded in many FAX's and Digital answering
  72. machines today.

  74. Look at it's main features: outstanding announcemet sound quality
  75. (8KHz/8bit compared with 4.8KHz/4bit used on popular voice modems,
  76. even the IBM MWAVE DSP modem currently offers only 4 bit
  77. announcements, as per an MWAVE consultant response we got), low CPU
  78. load (thanks to it's onboard 32 bit DSP, it can run even on a 286) and
  79. rock solid reliability (including reliable DATA/FAX/VOICE auto-detect
  80. and application support).
  81. It's main weaknesses are the result of lack of manufacturer promotion:
  82. relatively simple voicemail s/w application (no "flashy features" such
  83. as FAX-BACK and PAGING, although these are available from 3rd party
  84. developers) resulting from the fact that the manufacturer abandoned
  85. the product (i.e stopped making agreements with 3rd party S/W
  86. developers) quite early in it's life cycle.
  87. NATSEMI still supports the product but has stopped further S/W release
  88. developments. The TYIN modems are still available from various
  89. sources. They are also part of popular FAX-ON-DEMAND products such as
  90. ROBOFAX and others (they were sold largely as OEM products).

  92. So that's the whole story. As a result of this flaming, and also since
  93. we would like to hear other users, we have started a thread in this
  94. newsgroup requesting opinions of voice modem users about their voice
  95. modem sound quality and reliability. We hope to hear interesting
  96. responses...
